We are seeking a service-minded, permanent Workshop Master (MV08) for the technical services supporting education and research at School of Art, Design and Architecture at Aalto University. The position is full-time and will start in August 2026 or by agreement.
Your role
In this role, you will work in the Photo & Print team, with your primary workplace in the photography studios and darkrooms as a learning environment. As a Workshop Master, your work will include the following key responsibilities:
Ensuring and developing the workshop’s operations as a learning and research environment
• organizing, servicing, and maintaining machines, tools, and equipment
• recycling and waste management, including the handling of chemical waste from photography darkrooms
• inventory management (spare parts, materials, and students’ works)
• procurement of materials, tools, and spare parts
• annual operational planning and budgeting
• planning new investments and executing procurements
• active anticipation and understanding of ongoing changes and developments in the field
• knowledge of chemicals used in darkrooms and responsibility for their safe use
Guiding and supporting users
• guiding and supporting workshop users in the use of equipment, materials, and chemicals
• supporting students in learning studio techniques and darkroom work
• planning and organizing regular group orientations for workshop users
• supervising interns and workshop assistants
• collaborating with teachers and study coordinators on scheduling and course planning
Ensuring safe and healthy working conditions for students and other workshop users
• instructing workshop users in safe working practices
• actively advising on the use of protective equipment
• ensuring overall workshop safety
Your work environment
The Photo & Print team is responsible for the workshops for the printlab, fine art printmaking, drawing and painting ateliers, photography studios, and darkrooms. The team lead of the Photo & Print team acts as the supervisor. Our team consists of diverse professionals who support creative learning and research. We work closely with students and staff to create an inspiring and safe learning environment. Our workshops offer versatile tools and resources that enable experimentation and development across materials and techniques.

What we expect from you
Service, supporting learning, and enabling learning by doing are at the core of technical services. Our ideal candidate has
• experience and professional skills with equipment used in photography studios, lighting, darkroom work, and experience in equipment maintenance
• knowledge of key working methods, devices, and software
• experience in technical onboarding/training
• an understanding of the basics of course planning, and of organizing and delivering technical instruction—especially in the fields of art and photography is an advantage
• an understanding of the needs of users in workshops and other school facilities, and the ability to ensure that learning environments are fit for purpose, safe, and healthy
• strong interpersonal skills and a service-oriented, proactive, developmental, and positive approach to work, enabling smooth collaboration with academic staff, management, students/student representatives, your own team, and service personnel
• good IT skills and problem-solving abilities (key software specified)
• good spoken and written Finnish and good spoken and written English
• a relevant higher education degree or equivalent competence acquired otherwise
