Students must register to courses in the registration period in order to participate and complete courses. is used for registration to courses.

• As a main rule, registration to courses starts 28 days before the period of the course starts and ends 7 days before the period (if the course has a limited number of spaces) or 7 days after the period starts.
• If a course has some other registration period, it can be seen in Sisu.
• It is the responsibility of the programme and teacher to inform of special registration times.
• NOTICE! The courses do dot always start in the start of the period. Still the registation to courses is before the period starts. For special reasons the registering period can differ from these guidelines, please check the times from Sisu.

Decision of the Academic Committee on Arts, Design and Architecture of 16 June 2021.

The order of priority is as follows since August 9, 2021:  

1. Students of the program / major whose program / major studies include the course

2. Exchange students in the program / major for whose study plan the course has been approved

In addition, it has been possible to set quotas for the following students for the course

3. students whose course is part of a minor subject

4. students who have applied for the course through various mobility studies (JOO studies, separate studies, etc.)

The remaining places can be filled by students from the following target groups:

5. other ARTS students

6. Aalto students

Courses that are cross-disciplinary by default, can use the order of priority that is compatible with the course's learning objectives (eg. UWAS and elective art and theory courses offered by TAS). However, the university's obligation to organize the studies in a manner that allows the students to complete their studies within the normative duration of studies applies in these cases too. Quotas for different groups of students can be set for courses for a justified reason.

The order of priority does not override the teacher's right to set prerequisites for the course.

If the course is so popular that only some of the students in the program / major can be accepted, the university's obligation to arrange the studies in a way that allows students to complete their studies within the normative duration may be taken into account.

Decision made in TSAK 1/2022:

On reasonable grounds, students may be granted the right to transfer to another degree programme within the School. The student must append to the application a personal study plan explaining the intended completion of the degree in the new degree programme, as well as any other appendices required by the receiving programme. Before applying for a transfer, students shall discuss their personal study plan with Head of Major or Programme Director of their current programme.
To be eligible for a transfer to another programme, the student shall have demonstrated the knowledge and motivation required in the new programme by completing studies included in the programme applied for, and in any other manner required by the receiving programme.
Students transferring to another programme forfeit their right to study in their previous programme. If transfer to another programme is approved, the studies pursued in the previous programme are counted towards the degree pursued in the new programme to as great an extent as possible.
The principles specified above regarding transfer to another programme also apply to transfer to another major.
The decision regarding the transfer to another programme rests with the Director of the receiving programme. The decision regarding the transfer to another major is made by the Director of the programme at the proposal of the lecturer or professor in charge of the major.
The provisions on the transfer to another programme do not apply ������ programmes or transfers to the majors of Architecture or Landscape Architecture or to the master’s programmes in the same subjects.”

How to proceed:

• Discuss your personal study plan with the Programme director of your current Programme
• Discuss your plans with the Programme director or a Head of major of the receiving Programme
• Make an application (free formed) where you describe your motivation to apply for a transfer. Include your study plan and if other attachments are asked by the Programmes. Hand the application to the receiving Programme (Director or Head of major).
• LES will prepare a decision for Programme directors to sign if the application is approved. Application will then become an attachment for the decision.
• If the application is approved, LES will change your study right to SISU and you’ll forfeit your study right in the previous programme.

Students educated in Finnish or Swedish

For students educated in Finnish or Swedish, i.e. whose official mother tongue is Finnish or Swedish, language studies are designed to be completed as part of the Bachelor of Arts (Art and Design) or another Bachelor’s degree. Students who have not completed the required language studies before starting to pursue the master’s degrees specified above must complete them either as elective studies or in addition to the studies required for the degree. In such cases, the language requirements are as follows:

• 9 credits: 3 cr in written and oral communication, 3 cr in the second national language of Finland, and 3 cr in one foreign language.

Students educated in other languages than Finnish or Swedish

For students who have been educated in a language other than Finnish or Swedish (i.e. whose official mother tongue is neither Finnish nor Swedish) or who have been educated abroad, the language requirements are:

• 3 cr in one foreign language.

Students in this category may fulfil the language requirement for their Master's degree by completing courses that support their studies or their stay in Finland. Students who have been educated abroad are recommended to take Finnish courses as well as English courses that focus on the field-specific language of arts or technology and fulfil the language requirement of the degree. Students may also choose to fulfil the language requirement by completing courses in another foreign language of their choice; all courses counted towards the requirement must be taken in the same language. Language studies may either be counted towards the electives of the degree or completed in addition to the studies required for the degree.

Drawing and painting

Drawing and painting courses consist of two-dimensional expression carried out by various methods. The work involved emphasises the importance of practice, or ‘learning by doing’, but without losing sight of the connections to theory. The studies include working with drawing, painting and mixed-media. The student will gain increased awareness of the workings of visual perception and of different ways of describing the surrounding world and our relationship to it. The course also examines the role of ideas and concepts in art as well as art’s relation to design, its role in society and its significance.

Colour and perception

Colour and perception studies focus on visual perception and the theories about it. The English-language version of the course contains both theory and practical assignments. The course covers basic concepts about colour and the principles of colour perception. The course covers basic colour concepts and principles of colour perception. Colour composition and contrasts and their effects – mainly in two-dimensional expression – are studied by experimental means. The course ‘Colour - Light - Space D’ is aimed mainly at Master’s students of architecture, interior architecture and landscape architecture. Through lectures and assignments, it deals with the role of colour and lighting in architecture and in building a city’s image.

Sculpture

Sculpture studies provide students with the skills needed to work with contemporary sculpture and design. Skills that students can apply in their own fields are emphasised, such as how to research new materials, working methods and methodologies. The ‘Ways of Making’ courses offer practical experience working in a sculptor’s studio, and ‘Metal Casting’ introduces foundry techniques. ‘Digital Sculpture’ introduces new and developing technologies in 3D art, and ways to combine these with traditional sculptural techniques. Conceptual and theory-intensive sculpture studies are also included within the contemporary art courses programme.

Printmaking

Printmaking involves the handcrafting of printing plates as well as the prints produced by various methods (copperplate, woodblock, limestone, mesh screen). Prints are regarded as original artworks. Basic courses in printmaking offer the rudiments in a variety of printing techniques and develop the student’s command of the tools used. The intermediate courses deepen the knowledge and skill levels of students in their chosen method and enlarge their range of artistic expression. As printmaking is a specialisation study, beginners are recommended to take it during their second year of Bachelor’s studies.

Art history and theory

Art history and theory courses aim to provide a general overview of the history and key theoretical questions and conceptions of art, design and architecture.

Contemporary art

The contemporary art courses are aimed at the Master’s level, Bachelor’s as well as Doctoral students may also attend or seek admission. Most of the courses are taught in English.

Other courses

1. Start your thesis work as instructed in your study programme (thesis seminar, pre-thesis course etc.)
2. Give your thesis information: topic, supervisor and advisors in MyStudies
3. Thesis supervisor will be selected based on your thesis topic by the process defined in your study programme. The supervisor will confirm the supervision in MyStudies.
4. Supervisor approves your topic and thesis advisor / advisors in MyStudies and makes sure that you get advising and feedback on your thesis.
5. Supervisor approves thesis part I (10 cr) and part II (10 cr).
6. Thesis examiners are named when thesis part II is completed. Programme director confirms the examiners, supervisor is normally one of the examiners and the other one is for example programme faculty or an external expert from the field of study.
7. Take the originality report in Turnitin during your thesis process according to your programme practices. Your thesis advisor checks the report.
8. If you plan to graduate please make sure that your personal study plan (PSP) is up to date in SISU
9. Oral presentation is a mandatory part of thesis work and needs to be completed before the thesis is handed in for examination (instructed in your study programme)
10. When your thesis is ready to be evaluated, present it first to your advisor and then supervisor to get an examination permission from the supervisor. Oral presentation must be completed before examination permission can be given. NOTE! See also "Checklist for submitting the thesis" (below)
11. Thesis abstract is your maturity test. Supervisor approves maturity test. (more instructions below)
12. Apply for examination by submitting your thesis in MyStudies (incl. written part and production part / documentation of production) (instructions below) There are four possibilities a year to submit your thesis for evaluation. Originality check and AI detection check for yout thesis text are automatically created when you submit your work and your supervisor gets access to these reports.
13. If your thesis includes production part and the examiners haven’t examined it in an earlier phase please contact your examiners to schedule the examination of the production part.
14. Apply for graduation in SISU (instructions in sisu help and in your programme's graduation page)
15. Your thesis will be graded in the next programme committee meeting addressing thesis grades after hand-in deadline

If you have started your thesis work before 1 Aug 2024 you need to enter your thesis information to thesis page without delay.

1. Enter your thesis information as soon as possible to  (Supervisor, topic, advisors) and apply for approval for them. Please note that even if your topic has already been approved you need to enter the information to Mystudies AND apply for approval. These steps need to be completed well in advance before you can submit your thesis for evaluation.
2. NOTE! Select your programme according to your current study right. Even if you are able to select your previous programme it is no longer valid.

Maturity test in Master of Arts, Architecture and Landscape Architecture Degrees

In a master's degree the abstract of the thesis serves as maturity test. If a student's language of education (language they have been educated in secondary level) is Finnish or Swedish they write the abstract in two languages, in the language of education (Finnish or Swedish) and in English. If language of education is other than Finnish or Swedish, student writes the abstract only in English and the supervisor evaluates only the content of the abstract (and not the language).
Students who have been educated in Finland in Finnish or Swedish:

If the student has completed required language studies and maturity test according to their language of education in their bachelor's degree, they don't need to complete them in their master's degree. In this case only the content of the abstract will be evaluated by the supervisor.

If the student has not completed required language studies and maturity test according to their language of education in their bachelor's degree, their abstract needs to be sent to language check to language center. Student submits their Finnish language version of the abstract in MyCourses: In addition to the language check supervisor evaluates the content of the abstract.

Before proceeding to submit your thesis for evaluation, approval, and archiving, please check the following:

1. Your personal information and study right information above are accurate and up-to-date.
2. You have enrolled as an attending student at Aalto.
3. You have provided all necessary information in "Update Thesis Data".
4. You have given a thesis presentation.
5. If you have been asked to have the maturity demonstration language checked, you have sent your abstract to the Language Centre.
6. Add an abstract to your thesis. It is recommended to use the thesis abstract form (above).
7. Your thesis file follows the structure of the Aalto thesis template and is in PDF/A format AND size of the file under 100Mb.
8. The artistic component of the thesis is archived in digital documentation. If you have separate digital documentation of your artistic component (pictures, audio, video material), save it as a separate media appendix file(s) to the section reserved for it, remember to add also credentials and meta information for the documentation. Please note that if the documentation is included in the written part there's no need for separate documentation material.
9. You have familiarized yourself with the thesis approval schedule specific to your degree programme.
10. If you wish to graduate, submit graduation request in Sisu.

According to Finnish archiving practices, the file should be saved in PDF/A format. PDF/A is an ISO-standardized version of the Portable Document Format (PDF) specialized for the digital preservation of electronic documents. PDF/A differs from PDF by omitting features ill-suited to long-term archiving. Library recommends ISO-standardized versions PDF/A-1a, PDF/A-1b & PDF/A-2.

Instructions on how to convert files to PDF/A -format using the different tools

• If you use layout software (for example Adobe InDesign) you should create an PDF file and open it with Adobe Acrobat Pro and save it again: File > Save as Other > Achivable PFD (PDF/A).

Convert the PDF file so that it is suitable for web publishing. Maximum size for thesis file is 100 Mb. The recommended size for the pdf/a document is under 20 Mb and for Theses including a lot of images under 100 Mb. 

It is the student's responsibility to check that the PDF/A file has been correctly converted and that it is identical to the submitted thesis copies.

Naming the PDF file

You should name the file without Scandinavian letters (e.g. ä and ö) and special characters to the following format: school'sabbreviation_publishingyear_lastname_firstname.pdf, (e.g. arts_2013_meikalainen_matti.pdf).

The theses and the metadata of all theses will be archived in the . The term metadata refers to the data that describes your thesis for example the title of thesis, the language, keywords and the advisor of thesis. When submitting the thesis in eAge you can give permission to publish the whole-text and/or the abstract through the Aaltodoc publication archive.

The thesis publishing date can be postponed by a maximum of one (1) year. Hence, students don’t have to publish the thesis immediately if they wish to postpone publishing for reasons related to other publications, patent applications or corporate secrets, for example. However, please note that the thesis is still a public document and it will be displayed publically. The public copy can be seen in the Learning Centre customer computers or sent via email by request.

If you do not grant permission for publishing, the archived PDF file will be available for anyone by request but it is not published online. The Learning Centre is obliged to send the digital version to anyone who wants to read the thesis.

If the contents of your thesis, such as the text or a table, is found erroneous after the thesis has been approved, the errors can be corrected on a separate errata page (). Once your thesis has been approved, it cannot be altered or resubmitted to MyStudies. Instead, any errors found in it are collected on an errata page, which lists the page numbers of the errors and gives a corrected version of the text or item. The errata is attached to the thesis metatext in the Aaltodoc publication archive ().

Please follow the instructions below.

• Write the errata and save it in PDF/A format (not PDF/A-3).
• You can download a Word-format errata template from Aaltodoc.
• The errata must include the following details: the thesis author and thesis title, page number of the error and a corrected version of the text or item.
• Please send the errata page to your thesis supervisor to obtain their approval for it.
  • If you cannot reach your supervisor, send the errata to the learning services of your school (addresses provided below).

• Append your approved errata page to the metadata of your thesis on Aaltodoc in accordance with the .
  • If prompted, log in������doc using your Aalto username and password; you will find the link in the top right corner of the page.

  • Append the errata page to your thesis in Aaltodoc using the form on Aaltodoc.
  • Log out.

Requests for graduation will be submitted by filling out a graduation request through your study plan on Sisu. Your graduation request on Sisu should be based on your up-to-date primary study plan. Please note that you must be enrolled as an attending student on your graduation day.  

When applying for graduation, the other studies included in the degree must be completed and registered, and the thesis must be returned in its final form to MyStudies for grading. If there is no grade for the thesis at the time of submission of the graduation request, it will be entered in the register about a month after the Programme committee has made a decision on it.

Creating a study plan on Sisu is compulsory because Sisu generates the degree certificate based on both it and the graduation request.

Update your study plan (HOPS) on Sisu and apply for any approvals that may be missing.

• If any part(s) of your study plan require separate approval, are against the rules or have some other status preventing graduation, then your graduation cannot be processed. So submit the requests for approvals in time.
• Reserve enough time for this processing, so that the problems can be cleared up in time. If your study plan is not in order by graduation day, your graduation may be rescheduled for the next available graduation date.

The graduating students take part in a graduation survey. Please answer the survey before requesting graduation, after having submitted your thesis. The results of the survey are used to develop teaching and student services.

The Graduation Days

The graduation day is the same day when the request for graduation should be submitted in Sisu. Below you can find this year's dates for graduation. Degree certificate will be done after the graduation day.

Students graduating with a Master of Arts (Art and Design) degree or, in the field of technology, with a Master of Science (Architecture)/(Landscape Architecture) degree must complete all studies that will be included in the degree and have these studies registered as completed by the time they apply for a degree certificate. An exception to this rule are the Master’s thesis which have to be submitted for evaluation in its final form by the time the student applies for a degree certificate. In addition, the thesis has to be archived in the Aaltodoc publication archive through MyStudies. The thesis can be registered as approved even after the student has applied for a degree certificate.

Graduation dates 2025

When your degree certificate is ready, you will receive a personal email with instructions on when and how to receive it. Please make sure that your secondary email address at SISU is up to date so that we can contact you if your Aalto ID expires. 

Normally, degree certificates are not available until at least four weeks after the graduation date. Please note that the certificates for May, June and July graduates will be issued in August due to the Master's thesis evaluation schedule and staff summer vacations. You can download an electronically signed transcript from SISU as a provisional certificate once your status has changed to 'Graduated'. 

Once your certificate is ready, you can receive it in one of three ways: 

1. Collection from the School of Arts, Design and Architecture 

   Degree certificates are distributed every Thursday from 15:00 to 17:00 in room M311 on the third floor of the ��ä���� building. You can pick up your certificate on a Thursday that is convenient for you. There are no distribution times during the summer vacations or at the end of the year holidays.  
   
   Distribution of certificates for summer time 2025: Last chance to pick up the certificate on Thursday, June 19, 2025. The next distribution of certificates will be on August 14, 2025.
   
   If you are unable to pick up your certificate yourself, you can also authorize someone else to collect it on your behalf. In this case, please contact the address informing you that the certificate is ready for collection. 

2. At the Graduation Ceremony 

   You can receive your certificate at the Graduation Ceremony, which is held twice a year. The ceremonies are in January and June. We do not accept already collected certificates back to be received again at the ceremony. When you register for the ceremony, you have to indicate whether you have already received your certificate or if you would like to receive it at the ceremony. Note! Graduates in May and November will not receive their certificates at the ceremony due to thesis evaluation schedules and staff holidays.

3. Mailing outside the Helsinki Metropolitan Area 

   If you wish to have your degree certificate mailed to you, you will be asked to fill in a letter of authorization for mailing, which you will receive by email when the certificate is ready. 

   Certificates can be sent outside the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, not to Espoo, Helsinki, Vantaa or Kauniainen. 

ARTS graduates have a ceremony twice a year, in January (June - November graduates) and June (December - May graduates). The next graduation ceremony will be held on 17th June 2025.

You will receive an email inquiring about your participation in the Graduation Ceremony.

A graduating student may invite two guests to the graduation ceremony. The dress code is smart casual, considering the prestigious nature of the celebration.

The details of the programme are included in the invitation that is sent to the graduates by email.

There are reserved seats for the graduates in the front rows. The graduates are asked to arrive 15 minutes before the ceremony begins.

In addition to the School of ARTS graduation ceremony, an outdoor event “Graduation Party” will be organized in the middle of June 2025 for all bachelors, masters and licentiates who have graduated between 1 May 2024 and 30 April 2025 from Aalto University. 

Invitations to the event with registration link will be sent in April and May. So, remember to update your email address you’ll be using after the graduation in Sisu!

Students who, in the course of their studies towards either the bachelor’s or master’s degree, have shown excellent knowledge of the field as well as exceptional maturity and sense of judgment in the thesis may have this recognised in their degree certificate with the phrase ‘completed with honours’. The decision regarding awarding a degree with honours rests with the school.

In the field of technology a degree may be awarded with honours if the weighted average grade of the studies (with the thesis) included in the degree is at least 4.00 and if the thesis grade is 4 or 5.

If you graduate in the beginning of a term and you are able to change your enrolment status from attendance to non-attendance before the enrolment period ends, you can apply for a membership fee refund from the Student Union.Those who graduate later during the autumn term can apply for a refund on the following term’s membership fee, i.e. for the spring term. https://www.ayy.fi/en/membership-and-student-card/membership-fee

Your study right at Aalto University ends on your graduation date. Because the digital student card Frank App deploys a real-time system in verifying your student status, you cannot continue using the Frank App after you have graduated. If you have a plastic student card, it is valid until the end of your AYY membership period. However, note that if you have a plastic student card and you apply for reimbursement of the membership fee, you must visit your School’s Student Service point with your student card. The Student Service point will record the change and remove the academic year tag on your student card. • Return all keys and access badges.
• The right to access Aalto University IT services will remain valid for two (2) months after your graduation, after which it will be removed.
• Remember to make a copy of the files in your university-provided home directory (network drive) and cloud services (e.g. Google Drive) for yourself, as the files in your home directory will be removed once your access rights expire.
• Any messages sent to a closed Aalto e-mail account will not be delivered. If you have used your Aalto University e-mail address to create user accounts for other services (e.g. Apple ID or Dropbox), please remember to replace the Aalto address with your personal e-mail address in those services.
• Please note that you may be bound by a confidentiality obligation even after your graduation, if you have, for instance, gained access to secret information while in a position of trust at the university.

Aalto University graduates' degree information is saved automatically in Aalto's alumni and partner system (CRM) after the graduation.

National career monitoring survey is conducted by Career Services of Finnish Universities. The target group in Master's survey is alumni who graduated five years ago and in Doctoral survey alumni who graduated three years.

Starting Point of Wellbeing

The Student Services of School of Art, Design and Architecture does not have their own, specialised student service desk. Most cases can be handled via email, phone or by appointment. You are welcome to visit our meeting point LES Lounge (����� 3rd floor room M311).

With the guidance counsellor, you can talk about all matters related to your studies and future plans, get help with structuring your thoughts and get support for broader study planning and goal setting. The guidance counsellor can also help when you would like to talk with someone about your studies but are not sure whom to contact.

The guidance counsellor can help if you want to, for example,

•     reflect your strengths and interests
•    explore different study options (minors, study exchange etc.)
•    discuss any subject concerning your studies that puzzles you (motivation, change of program/field etc.)

You can reserve time via . The length of the appointment is 45 minutes and available times (ca. 3/week) are on different weekdays.
