A personal study plan (HOPS) is made in the student information system

For instructions on how to make a personal study plan, please see Making a personal study plan (HOPS) in the Sisu instructions. The study plan will be checked by the study coordinator and if required, by the professor in charge of the programme. You will receive more information and guidance for making your study plan at the latest during orientation week. You will enroll to courses through your primary study plan.

The study plan is a binding agreement to both parties: the student and the university. It grants the student with a right to study according to the approved, official personal study plan, but at the same time, obliges the student to follow his/her study plan.

Your personal study plan is a tool for you that helps you to plan your studies and keep track of their progress. When you have considered your goals, chosen the courses accordingly and drafted a realistic and target-oriented schedule for completing these studies, you have a map for making your plans a reality. Also, you will not able to register for courses without a study plan.

When you have completed your studies, you will apply for graduation based on your approved personal study plan and the degree certificate will be prapared based on these studies. In order to succeed in your studies, please keep your study plan up-to-date and contact Student services if you have any questions. Remember that it is always possible to update the personal study plan later on, so do not worry, your personal study plan does not have to be the final plan.

The personal study plan is done in the beginning of your studies, but note that it is beneficial for you to start planning your studies well in advance.

• Check the course offering from the SECCLO curriculum.
• Next consider what your own interests and goals are, what do you want to learn and what skills to develop during your studies.
• It is good to keep in mind that your study time is limited. SECCLO programme is completed in two years, and therefore you have to complete at least 60 ECTS per year.
• It is rather likely that as your studies proceed, your plans may change for one reason or another. The study plan can – and needs to be – always updated according to your own situation and goals.

If you want to discuss your plan with someone or if you need guidance, you can always contact the student services.

If the status of your HOPS is "against the rules" send it for approval and add comments to justify your choices. If you are granted approval to replace a compulsory course with another one or if you are taking a course from outside of the list of courses in SECCLO curriculum, please send the confirmation of the major professor by email to your study coordinator (unless the course is extra and will not be included in your degree. In this case, please justify in the comments).

• 10 november 2025 at 16:00-17:30 - HAIC Talk:  Heidi Kuusniemi, Tampere University: Resilient Positioning, Navigation and Timing: the Cybersecurity Frontier of Satellite Navigation, Lumituuli auditorium, Dipoli, Aalto University
  • Lecture description: Satellite navigation systems such as GPS and Galileo and the soon emerging Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based satellite navigation constellations form the invisible geospatial backbone of our digital society. The precise positioning and timing they provide underpin transportation and logistics, communications networks, energy grids, and countless other applications and services. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are, however, inherently vulnerable, since their open signals can be jammed or spoofed, turning trusted time and location data into potential attack vectors. The growing prevalence of threats has made resilient Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) a critical cybersecurity frontier.
  • This talk explores how cybersecurity principles intersect with satellite navigation across the signal, system and measurement layers. Real-world examples of jamming and spoofing incidents are presented alongside emerging countermeasures such as signal authentication, interference detection and mitigation, fault detection and exclusion (FDE), and multi-source multi-layer PNT architectures combining space-based, terrestrial and sensor inputs. The talk concludes with an outlook on Europe’s evolving geospatial initiatives including ESA’s Celeste LEO-PNT mission and Galileo’s authentication services and how they contribute to a more secure, trusted and resilient PNT ecosystem vital for e.g. critical infrastructures and autonomous systems.
  • About the speaker: Heidi Kuusniemi is a Professor of Wireless Systems at Tampere University, holding a joint professorship with the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute of the National Land Survey of Finland. Her research focuses on resilient positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) systems, including satellite navigation interference detection and mitigation and reliable multi-system and multi-sensor navigation. Her work bridges the domains of geospatial technology, wireless systems and cybersecurity, with the goal of ensuring trustworthy positioning and situational awareness from space to Earth. Prof. Kuusniemi has led numerous national and international research and development projects on localization resilience, sensor fusion, and the space economy. She is President of the Nordic Institute of Navigation and a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, and was named Professor of the Year 2025 by the Professors’ Union of Finland.

• 20 October 2025 at 16:00-17:30: HAIC Talk: On the security of eBPF Linux kernel extensions— with Riccardo Sisto, Lumituuli auditorium, Dipoli, Aalto University
  • Lecture description: eBPF is a very powerful new technology that is revolutionising the approach to system operations, such as system and network monitoring and security enforcement. Since it is based on enabling the execution of user-provided code in the kernel, the flexibility and performance advantages it provides come with a price in terms of security risk. Even though eBPF was endowed with security mechanisms designed to counter the main possible threats, such mechanisms are far from perfect and have their own vulnerabilities.
  • The purpose of this talk is to present the main security issues of eBPF, including attack surfaces and countermeasures, and to discuss the underlying risks and future trends. The talk is based on studies done within the Elastic EU Project.
  • About the speaker: Riccardo Sisto is a Full professor at the Turin Polytechnic, Italy, in the Department of Control and Computer Engineering, where he leads the Netgroup, a research group focusing on the study of networking-related technologies.

The defense against cyber attacks is an ongoing, relentless effort. In the near future, we are likely to witness fully automated malware campaigns powered by machine learning or generative AI. Consequently, it may become evident that the only effective countermeasure to a bad AI is a good AI.
  • About the speaker: Mikko Hyppönen is a cyber security researcher and best-selling author. His TED Talk has been viewed over 2 million times and translated into 40 languages. He has advised the Monetary Authority of Singapore and EUROPOL and has written for leading publications like The New York Times, Wired, and Scientific American. Mikko has also lectured at top universities, including Harvard, Oxford, and MIT. His latest book has been published in five languages.

  The event brings together local academia, students and industry and gives an overview of on-going information security research in Finland’s capital area. Annual Demo Day events are excellent for networking and searching for open positions within the local infosec industry and academia. Secure Systems Demo Days are public events and free of charge. Events are organized by the Secure Systems research groups at Aalto University and University of Helsinki in collaboration with Helsinki-Aalto Institute for Cybersecurity (HAIC).

  • We are happy to announce that HAIC Talks series of public lectures on contemporary topics in cybersecurity will continue and the next HAIC talk will discuss the Privacy in 5G - Explained at the example of Pretty Good Phone Privacy (PGPP)

    Lecture description: 5G has learned lessons from previous generations and improved the privacy of a subscriber. Still it seems that the privacy is not perfect and there are offerings like Pretty Good Phone Privacy (PGPP) that promise an even better privacy. As a consumer, the question arises, how good is 5G privacy and what are the real privacy risks, if I take PGPP is my privacy really better and what are the potential side effects? In this talk, we will focus on location privacy, its improvements, but also the weak practical issues that come when 5G networks are deployed.

  Welcome to the last HAIC talk in 2022. The talk will discuss

  Speaker: Prof. Yongdae Kim, Department of Electrical Engineering and the Graduate School of Information Security and a head of Police Science and Technology Research Center at KAIST, Korea.

  Time: 16:00 – 17:30 (coffee and buns served from 15:30). The lecture will be approximately 60 minutes, after which there will be time for questions.

  Lecture description: In a couple of years, "study items" for the 6G security standard will be set. Security issues not included in these study items are unlikely to be standardized and patched even in 6G. Therefore, before these study items are set, the security research community needs to put in effort to find security vulnerabilities in cellular standards up to 5G. Furthermore, as a community, we need to find solutions to these vulnerabilities that are practical enough to be accepted by the standard bodies. In this talk, I will introduce unpatched design vulnerabilities and attacks in cellular standards up to 5G. I will also talk about potential defense mechanisms and reasons why they have not been accepted in 3GPP so far.

Summer intenship (2-5 ECTS)

Between the first and second academic year, students will complete an internship in European industry or research institution. During the internship, the student will work in a real R&D environment or expert organization as a member of a project team. The duration of the internship is at least one month, three months maximum. A 10-week internship that meets the program requirements results in 5 ECTS, which are included in Aalto first year curriculum.

Aalto together with the other SECCLO consortium member universities will supervise the process to ensure that all students find a placement for the internship, and that the internship projects and work contracts are aligned with the program goals and schedule. The organization which provides the internship placement will assign a local supervisor, who will act as the student’s mentor on developing technical and career skills. During the internship, each student will also have a named contact person from the programme’s academic staff. The students keep an online learning diary of their internship and write a reflective report.

Students whose internship is shorter than 10 weeks and who still need credits for the first year will be given a special assignment, i.e. an individual research or software engineering project, to complete.   

The learning goals of the internship are the following:

•     Students will gain experience of working in an R&D environment or expert organization in Europe.
• Students will develop personal contacts in European industry and research institutions.
• Students will become familiar with several career path options available to them.
• Students will learn how to apply for a job in industry, including preparing an application letter and professional CV, and taking part in an internship interview.

SECCLO associate partners and other companies from the partner university networks are invited to offer internship positions for the students.

SECCLO students are responsible for finding their own internship positions, but you will receive support from academic and administrative staff and Aalto Career Services.

Please note that:

• Minimum length of the internship is one month and maximum three months.
  • Two weeks of working full-time equals 1 ECTS credit.
  • If work is part-time, then 80 hours of work equals 1 ECTS credit.
  • You can also combine periods of full-time and part-time work. In all cases, the work certificate attached to your credit application will need to specify the duration/hours worked.
     
• Internship should take place in Finland, in other consortium university country (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Estonia or France) or in other EU country.
  • If you plan to take a position outside of EU country, please contact programme coordinator in advance.
  • Consortium associate members are highly recommended organizations for internship, please see the list of associate members at
  • It is recommended to take the internship outside Aalto University, but an internship at Aalto University Department of Computer Science is also allowed.
  • Erasmus Mundus scholarship recipients: scholarship holders spending part of the EMJMD course in their legal country of residence are not entitled to benefit from the monthly subsistence allowance for this period. The monthly subsistence allowance is not given to scholarship holders from a partner country for the EMJMD periods exceeding three months spent in any partner country (thesis preparation, internship, etc.).

1. The internship is a compulsory part of the first-year studies in SECCLO. Therefore, you should notify the study coordinator/planning officer once you have found your internship position. This information will be collected through a Webropol survey which is sent in January/February. You do not need to inform about your internship before receiving the link to the survey. You can fill in the survey later also, once you have found the position.
2. During the internship: you can write a learning diary on a weekly basis. Your diary will help you to write the reflective final report, which you will attach to your credit application (see instructions below for the final report).
3. If you have done the internship outside of Finland, please choose the SCI.itra code on your study plan (this code is for internships completed abroad).
4. After the internship, you must return the documents listed below. . See section "Submitting the application".
    
   • practical training application
   • certificate from the employer. The certificate must state the duration of the employment period, if it was a part- or full-time position, and a list of your duties. In the case of a part-time job, the weekly hours must be specified.
   • final report. See instructions below.
5. Submit your credit application as soon as you have completed the internship or 15th August 2025 at the latest in one PDF file by email to planning officer. Do not submit the report in MyCourses.

Instructions for the final report on your work experience

Your can use your learning diary as the basis for your final report of the internship. The purpose of the report is to tie your work experience into your studies. Your final report should be free-form, but NOT in bullet point format. Please use the SECCLO template. The length of the report should be 1-2 pages. You should reflect upon your experience and the following questions:

• What skills did your duties require?
• How did you benefit from the knowledge and skills gained during your studies?
• What new skills did you acquire?
• What development areas you now find in your skills based on your work experience (e.g. skills related to the substance of your field, communication skills, language skills)?
• How are you planning to develop these areas during your studies?
• How was the work experience relevant to your plans for the future (which direction you want to develop professionally, what do you want to achieve in your career, what kinds of matters and duties you find interesting)?
• What ideas for development do you have concerning your work duties in light of the things you have studied so far?

The scope of the degree is 120 ECTS. If you take extra credits from Aalto, they will be left out of the degree, but you may receive a separate transcript of them.

We will transfer all the credits that count towards your degree at the partner university. However, at least 50% of the scope of the degree must be completed at Aalto meaning at least 60 ECTS. If you take extra courses and receive more than 60 ECTS, be aware that you cannot use them to take less credits at Aalto – you will still need to complete 60 ECTS in order to graduate here.

We will transfer all the credits that count towards your degree at the partner university. However, at least 50% of the scope of the degree must be completed at Aalto meaning at least 60 ECTS. If you take extra courses and receive more than 60 ECTS, be aware that you cannot use them to take less credits at AalThe credit transfer between the two universities will be handled by the administrative staff. We will translate each individual course grade of your exit university in������ grades according to the scaling table below. Note that failed courses cannot be transferred because Aalto cannot give credits for failed courses. Note also that the summer school and internship are part of your entry year studies at Aalto University according to the SECCLO degree structure, i.e. you should get 60 ECTS including the summer school and internship at Aalto University.
