School of Chemical Engineering

Alumna Essi Yliaho :“I feel enthusiastic everyday as we are working to tackle global challenges together!”

Practical studies with case studies in co-operation with companies, a spark for sustainability and a master’s thesis that lead to a job in the field. Essi Yliaho graduated from the Master's Programme in Chemical, Biochemical and Materials Engineering - Biomass Refining in 2020.

Why did you want to study a degree in Master of Science in Chemical Engineering?

I was enthusiastic to continue my studies in the same field after doing my bachelor´s degree at Aalto. I felt a strong interest towards bioproducts and sustainability already during my bachelor’s studies. I was looking for a major that would take me deeper into the topic. I got a summer job in the forest industry and this interesting experience sealed my decision to apply for the Biomass Refining major.

What was the best thing about your studies?

The best thing about my studies was that I was able to feed my curiosity by combining knowledge from different fields. I have always been interested in problem solving and seeing the big picture with sustainability related issues. The Biomass Refining major allowed me to look at things from a wide perspective. I was able to diversify my previous knowledge of chemistry, but even more importantly, combine the skills with topics like sustainability and business.

The best things about chemical engineering is that there are endless opportunities: chemical engineering goes together with pretty much everything from computer science to arts and back to natural science and law. You can work in both research and within the industry, so you will be able to build your own pathway in future working life!

What course did you find most interesting and what was it about?

All the courses that were conducted in collaboration with companies in the biomass industry. These courses enabled valuable interaction with the company representatives, brought out an industry perspective into our subjects and practical examples. In addition, I found that working on case exercises set out by the companies were really motivating and rewarding. One of these courses was Planning and Execution of a Biorefinery Investment Project, in which life cycle of the investment project was gone through via actual project case.

Do you already have a job after your studies? How did you get it?

I am working in the same company in which I completed my master’s thesis. I applied for the master’s thesis position based on their job announcement. I was enthusiastic when I read the job description, as the master’s thesis topic was everything that I had wished for. I still feel enthusiastic everyday as we are working to tackle the global challenges!

Have you been working during your studies in the field that you are studying? (for e.g. summer job)

I have been working every summer within the bioproduct industry in various positions. During my master’s studies, I also worked part time.

What do you want to do after you have graduated? Do you have a dream job?

I feel like I am currently working in my dream job! Heading towards new challenges, being curious and learning new things is something that I will keep doing also after graduation. Currently, my interests lie on business development and sustainable bio-based solutions.
