We organise visits for school groups or anyone interested in the field, to the Robotics Lab, Acoustics Lab, the ePowerHub laboratory, and the Aalto Factory of the Future.

Instructions for booking a visit

We offer two types of visit opportunities: 

  1. Groups and individuals can book a visit to their desired laboratory through the reservation calendar of that specific laboratory. Visits are scheduled for the last Friday of the month. The links can be found below in connection with each laboratory's description.
  2. School groups can book a visit that includes a tour of one or two laboratories, as well as a general presentation on electrical engineering studies. If you would like to book such a visit for your school group, please contact Charlotta Tuovinen via email at charlotta.tuovinen@aalto.fi.

Our research infrastructure is primarily used for research purposes, which is why we recommend groups interested in both the presentation and laboratory visit (visit type 2) to schedule their visit primarily for the last Friday of the month when there are designated times for visits in the laboratories. However, except for the Acoustics Lab, we can also arrange other visit times while considering research usage.

Robot Lab

The Aalto Robot Lab hosts a wide variety of mobile robots and robotic manipulators. We have four mobile robots: the Boston Dynamics Spot robot dog, the Fraunhofer Care-o-Bot 4 humanoid-looking service robot, an outdoor Clearpath Husky mobile platform, and a Robotis Turtlebot 3 mobile research platform. We also have two Franka Panda lightweight robotic manipulators. In addition to the robots, our lab features a motion capture area capable of tracking the precise motion of around 30 objects, as well as a VR/XR infrastructure.

The lab is a collaborative effort among three research groups: Intelligent Robotics, Mobile Robotics, and Robotic Learning research groups. The research conducted in the lab covers various topics in robotics, ranging from the correct utilisation of robotic manipulators to grasp and manipulate different materials, to exploring human spaces in a socially aware manner using mobile robots. A significant portion of the research focuses on understanding how to teach robots to perform complex tasks by combining human demonstrations, simulation, and AI.

Additionally, the lab hosts courses for bachelor and master students.

Acoustics Lab

The Aalto Acoustics Lab has outstanding facilities for sound-related research. Lab has three anechoic chambers (Lampio, Köykkä and Wilska), a variable acoustics room Arni, a listening test room Otala and three independent sound-insulated booths. The lab also have standard acoustic measurement equipment and systems, such as measurement microphones and amplifiers, accelerometers, signal analyzers, sound level meters, an acoustic impedance measurement system, a laser Doppler vibrometer, and a dummy head. Additionally, the Aalto Acoustics Lab provides excellent audio reproduction systems for research and demonstrations, including reference-quality headphones and many Genelec loudspeakers.

The laboratory likely has Finland's quietest space: the background noise in the anechoic chambers is -2 decibels, which falls below the human hearing threshold.

You can visit the Acoustics Laboratory on the last Friday of every month.

ePowerHub

The ePowerHub enables research of electrical machines and drives, power electronics, integration of renewables into the electric grid, and characterisation of magnetic materials. These technologies are essential for wind turbines, solar photovoltaic plants, electric vehicles, and many other industrial applications.

There are four research groups working in the ePowerHub facilities. In addition to research, we offer hands-on teaching of energy conversion devices (machines, drives, power electronics) for master's and doctoral students in the field of electrical engineering and automation.

Aalto Factory of the Future

Aalto Factory of the Future is a laboratory facility for research and teaching in the area of Industry 4.0 / Industry 5.0. It is a space where a variety of enabling technologies for Industry 5.0 are tested, from industrial collaborative robotics, linear robotics, automated ground vehicles (AGVs), industrial controller programmable logic controllers (PLCs), cloud and edge computing, advanced wireless connectivity (5G), and augmented / mixed Reality (AR/XR). Various industrial production test equipments are utilized, such as automated car assembly, mobile phone assembly, and water treatment / heating system. The facility also hosts a vertical farm setup.   

On the tour, visitors will get a hands-on, illustrative look at the next generation of industrial automation and Industry 5.0. Visitors will experience a "living lab" environment where the focus is on the integration of software, automated machines and robotics, and human workers, including the opportunity to: 

  • See autonomous production units in action, such as car/automotive assembly and mobile phone assembly
  • Interact with collaborative robots, try and see how they can be re-programmed
  • See how real-life industrial controls are implemented
  • See examples on how artificial intelligence/AI are tested and applied in various industrial applications
  • See how industrial AR/XR setup can look like and what example applications are possible.
