Classification systems in the EU sanctions programs

The EU sanction programs, tailored case-by-case to meet with the objectives set for the respective sanction program, use various methods for classifying items in the product coverage of particular sanction program. EU sanction programs use various methods for classifying items in the product coverage of particular sanction program. Such methods entail 

  • descriptions of characteristics or features (similar method to EU list of dual-use items); or
  • references to classification codes used elsewhere in public regulation such as the Combined Nomenclature (CN) and TARIC (integrated tariff of the European Union); or
  • references to CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service) registry numbers.
