Each Aalto student has a right to receive reasonable individual study arrangements for medical reasons. A medical reason may be dyslexia, a sensory impairment, mental health condition or learning difficulty. Individual study arrangements should not be seen as a reason to stop aiming for the set learning outcomes. Instead, they are a way of supporting the student in attaining the learning outcomes.
Examples of individual study arrangements include additional time for examinations (1 hour at Aalto), a private space or computer for examinations, or adjusted schedules. Individual study arrangements are based on an assessment by a specialist. This means that you need a certificate from a doctor, psychologist or similar specialist explaining your need for individual study arrangements.
Students sometimes request exceptional arrangements due to unforeseeable circumstances that arise during the course. Possible reasons include acute serious illness or military refresher training. It is up to the teacher to assess the situation and decide on the request. The teacher may ask the student to provide a doctor’s certificate or other relevant documentation before making the decision. However, documents with sensitive personal information should not be sent to the teacher’s or course’s email address. Instead, the teacher (or course instructions) may ask the student to send the documents to Learning Services for verification. Learning Services will inform the teacher when the documents have been checked. The teacher and student can then continue to discuss the necessary arrangements, such as an extension to a deadline.
