The next generation surface characterisation for industrial quality control and R&D
Aalto University and Slush, the startup and technology event, have a long history together – after all, Slush has its roots deep in the Aalto ecosystem. Aalto University promotes sustainable economic growth by combining research with sustainable development goals, radical creativity, and entrepreneurial thinking, along with strong support for student entrepreneurship.
At Slush, we will be presenting ambitious technological solutions for quantum computers, new types of electric motors, dementia monitoring, and bio-based packaging materials, among other things. At our booth, you can also learn about the new Founder School entrepreneurship initiative, which consists of entrepreneurship studies open to all Aalto students, a coaching program tailored to the most promising ideas, and a series of public lectures held by successful growth entrepreneurs.
"The success of growth companies is the strongest asset of the Finnish economy and, therefore, the entire country. The goal of the program is to launch more companies from Aalto in the future—and to give them even better tools for success," says serial entrepreneur Mårten Mickos.
Welcome to the Aalto booth to meet researchers and the leaders of Founder School!

Extremely defogging surfaces
A next-generation leak detection system designed to tackle the common issue of water leakage which is acute in older buildings.
Coulomb Blockade Thermometer (CBT) for accurate cryogenic temperature measurement.
Thin membrane antenna technology for space applications, aiming to provide high-gain, lightweight antennas for small satellites to address the pressing need for reliable satellite-based connectivity.
Advancing the performance of quantum computers by well-thermalized filters and attenuators to prevent heat generation during qubit manipulation.
100% bio-based packaging materials to replace plastics
Advanced motor design with modular structure, compact size, and lightweight while significantly enhancing efficiency through a 50% reduction in production materials, leading to substantial cost savings.
Advanced machine learning to create an optimal interface between factory management and raw material data, aiming to optimize materials selection, design, and processing.
Discovery of various neurological diseases with the early detection dysarthia.
Smart sensors that detect changes in balance to help older adults stay safe and independent.

GreenSense enables tracking and analysis of physical movement and balance to predict and prevent falls especially for people with neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s and Dementia. The concept helps reduce risks of injuries and associated costs of treatment / recovery, that have adverse impacts on the quality of life, especially for older adults.
AI-programmable multi-gas sensor based on biodegradable nanomaterials.
Basic research in artificial intelligence (AI) doesn’t always generate quick wins or clickbait headlines, but its benefits can be seen throughout society
Talent is fuel for the future — and Finland also needs it from abroad. Aalto and VTT have been internationalising rapidly, but the nation still has room for improvement in supporting international experts to put down roots.
