The Erasmus Mundus funding includes 61 scholarships for outstanding European and non-European students for two-year studies in the programme. A total of 38 programmes were selected out of 122 programme proposals. SECCLO is a successor to the very successful NordSecMob – Master’s Programme in Security and Mobile Computing, which ran for 10 years (2006–2015) with more than 200 graduates.  

SECCLO focuses on two specific aspects of modern computing systems: cloud computing, which in a broad sense means highly distributed and scalable computation and data storage in data centers as well as physically accessible devices, and information security, which means protection of computation, communication and data from unauthorized access. It responds to the demand for professional engineers who are able to innovate and build the next generation cloud and mobile computing services and applications.

“The emphasis on combining strong security knowledge with hands-on R&D skills in a specific technical area, cloud computing, is a special characteristic of SECCLO,” says Professor Tuomas Aura, Director of SECCLO.

The first year of the SECCLO programme is offered by Aalto University School of Science. The second year is completed at one of the consortium partner universities: The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden, The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Technical University of Denmark (DTU), University of Tartu, Estonia, or EURECOM, France. Upon completion of the programme, the student receives a double degree. The associate members of SECCLO consortium include companies and research centers which offer thesis positions, summer jobs and internships:Nokia Bell Labs (France), Cybernetica (Estonia), F-Secure (Finland), Guardtime (Estonia), Intel Labs Europe (Germany) and VTT Technical Research Center of Finland.

At Aalto University, SECCLO students will become members of HAIC – Helsinki-Aalto Center for  Information Security, which was created in 2016 as strategic initiative of Aalto University and University of Helsinki to ensure excellence in information security research and education. HAIC students have opportunities to visit and interact with HAIC industry partners, including F-Secure, Intel, and Nixu, to learn about various opportunities that HAIC partner companies can offer to students.

The application period to SECCLO begins in December.
