Alumni encounters from Chicago to Chennai
Spring 2025 alumni activities abroad in numbers.
We want to build an active international alumni community that consists of numerous local alumni networks around the world.
In these networks, alumni ambassadors play a key role. Ambassadors, for example, organise alumni meetings, act as a contact point between the university and local alumni, and advise students who consider moving abroad for work or studies.whom we support in planning and organizing activities.
Alumni Ambassadors brought together alumni in Amsterdam, Brussels, London, Munich and other cities. A playful Aalto May Day package inspired ambassadors to organise May Day picnics in Boston, Edinburgh, Hamburg and London.
In Germany and India, the ambassadors participated in student recruitment fairs, where they told potential students about their study experiences in Aalto and their life in Finland.

The alumni get-together at Gensler office in Seattle drew attendees even from Vancouver. Associate Vice President Hannu Seristö shared the latest in Aalto’s research and education, while alumni Yannis Paniaras, Osama Bilal, and Shuai Cao led a stimulating discussion on the transformative power of AI.

The alumni event in Chicago was hosted by Honorary Consul Jon K. Jurva together with President Ilkka Niemelä. Alumni were particularly interested in Aalto's groundbreaking innovations, as presented by Tomi Erho, Director of Innovation Ecosystem Services. Our US alumni ambassadors Tytti Scarsella and Ari I. Backman shared memories of their student years and career paths.

In San Francisco, together with Santa Clara University, we invited alumni to discuss the hopes and challenges of AI. The event was co-hosted by Mike Markkula and Kristi Bowers along with President Ilkka Niemelä and Julie Sullivan, President of Santa Clara. A panel of top experts, including Aalto researchers Samuel Kaski and Vikas Garg, Hewlett Packard Labs Chief Architect Kirk Bresniker and Professor Maya Ackerman from Santa Clara, sparked a lively discussion on the changes AI is driving. After the discussion, there was time for networking led by Mårten Mickos, Executive in Residence at Aalto.

In April, we had an alumni afterwork in Copenhagen. Before the event, Aalto University Executive Education organised a Creative Ventures workshop, which brought together people from different creative fields to discuss how to turn ideas into innovations and how to navigate the creative business world.

In Sweden, we met with alumni in Gothenburg in April and Stockholm in June, where Vice President Petri Suomala highlighted the importance of cooperation between Finland and Sweden and alum Salla Lonka shared her career story and experiences in the world of marketing, telling that Aalto's interdisciplinary mindset has stayed with her all the way to this day.

In April, we met dozens of alumni in Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, New Delhi and Mumbai in India. Aalto representatives also visited several universities and student recruitment fairs in different cities. One of the highlights of the trip was a keynote speech by Jouko Lampinen, Dean of the School of Science, at the popular GIDS tech event in Bangalore.

In May, we invited alumni to Tokyo and the Osaka World Expo, where Aalto was exhibited in the EU pavilion. We had many discussions with the visitors about how we can move towards more beautiful, sustainable and inclusive housing.
In Tokyo, the alumni event was hosted by Ambassador Tanja Jääskeläinen. The event also included the Japanese premiere of the documentary film Radical Creatives, and as usual, the film sparked a lively discussion on the importance of creativity in a changing world.

The Embassy of Finland in London hosted a "sold-out" alumni event in May, bringing together 100 London-based alumni from seven Finnish higher education institutions. Aalto was represented at the event by Provost Kristiina Mäkelä. She hopes that embassies around the world will continue to organise joint alumni events for Finnish universities.

In June, the Dean of the School of Business Timo Korkeamäki and Head of External Relations Jonna Söderholm hosted an Alumni after-work in Paris. There were almost an equal number of art, technology and business alumni, and everyone expressed how valuable it was to meet fellow alumni representing different fields.
During the spring, alumni events were also held in Berlin, Boston and Seoul.
In September we will meet alumni in Singapore and Seoul, in October in Oslo and German cities and in December in New York. Furthermore our alumni ambassadors will organise get-togethers around the world.
