EIT Digital's first innovation doctors have graduated

EIT Digital has granted its first doctorates to six students. Amongst them is Finnish Anna Viljakainen who works for VTT.

The new PhD programme trains digital technology leaders with deep technical experience combined with a strong background in innovation, entrepreneurship and business transformation.

- The overall experience at EIT Digital doctoral school has been positive. The programme was very useful and definitely worth the struggles. Thanks to the doctoral school I got to study and work at the University of Cambridge for 1,5 years and to do my dissertation and work full-time at the same time. I got to evolve my knowledge and know-how and it has been very beneficial for both me and my employer. I developed valuable connections and I hope they will last for a lifetime, says recently graduated Anna Viljakainen.

More than two thirds of all European PhD graduates in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields eventually end up working outside of academia, primarily in the industry.

- Our graduates are true digital leaders already actively working as innovators. Some work in industry, and others have launched their own startups. It proves the added value of our graduates as European leaders in new digital technologies. says Prof. Dr. Willem Jonker, CEO of EIT Digital.

The EIT Digital Doctoral school was established in 2012. There are currently 130 students studying at seven EIT Digital Doctoral Training Centres  in Budapest, Helsinki, Madrid, Paris, Rennes, Sophia-Antipolis and Trento which are run in cooperation with 18 partner universities in Europe. The Helsinki node is situated in Otaniemi in Espoo.

EIT Digital Finland belongs to the Knowledge and Innovation Community of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. EIT Digital’s Finnish partners are Aalto Unbiversity, VTT and Nokia.
