University of Helsinki and Aalto University seal strategic partnership

Benefitting from each other's strengths, the universities' joint aim is to develop internationally attractive research and teaching environments.

The University of Helsinki and Aalto University have created a solid concentration of knowledge and learning in the capital region, one covering nearly all fields of science.

鈥 The partnership agreement marks a consolidation and concrete realisation of our longstanding collaboration in research and support services. Our universities make a good fit. Our complementarities will enhance our quality and international competitiveness. This in turn will benefit the capital region and Finland as a whole, explains the University of Helsinki's Rector Jukka Kola.

鈥 The agreement enhances our ability to plan out our collaborative work in advance and to evaluate annually, in addition to research and teaching, what services we can offer together, possibly with other universities and schools as well. The digital revolution is one area where together we can really seize the opportunities offered. Working together we can also continue the construction of major research infrastructures so that costly systems may be efficiently optimised, observes Tuula Teeri, President of Aalto University.

Partnership gains for Finland

The strategic partnership agreement aims to increase the recognition of Finland and its capital region as being a forerunner in research and education. Another aim is to bring the knowledge and innovation produced at the universities to where it is better utilised by society.

Many joint projects and units already

The agreement is a natural extension of the broad collaborative work that is already ongoing. Among the universities鈥 joint units and projects are: Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT; the Helsinki Center of Economic Research, HECER; the Urban Academy; and Health Capital Helsinki.
