Dean’s incentive scholarship (SCI)

Since academic year 2016–2017, the School of Science has awarded dean’s incentive scholarships for good academic progress. The scholarship is awarded upon application to those students of the School of Science who meet the conditions below.

The student must complete at least 60 credits on their first year of study. The amount of the incentive scholarship is 250 €.
The student must complete at least 60 credits on their second year of study. The amount of the incentive scholarship is 250 €.
The student must graduate with a bachelor’s degree on their third year of study. The amount of the incentive scholarship is 500 €.

The student must have a primary right to study in the School of Science on 31 July of the academic year in question (excluding students who have graduated with a BSc degree during the academic year). Students with a right to study entering into force the next day, 1 August, are not eligible for the scholarship.

The completed studies must be mainly included in the degree being pursued. If the student has another valid right to study for another degree at Aalto University, first- and second-year bachelor's students must have completed at least 45 credits in accordance with the study plan of the School of Science.

The dean has decided to lower the minimum number of credits required of students who have informed the university of having a learning difficulty or dyslexia, which has slowed the progress of their studies. In such cases, first- and second-year students must earn at least 55 credits during the academic year. Graduation must still occur within the target time according to the above conditions.

The student pursuing both a bachelor’s and master’s degree must graduate with a master’s degree on their fifth year of study. The amount of the incentive scholarship is 500 €.
The student pursuing only a master’s degree must graduate with a master’s degree on their second year of study. The amount of the incentive scholarship is 500 €.

Year of study
A year of study is defined by adding up all terms the student has enrolled as attending in the programme. Being absent for half a year cannot be considered when awarding the scholarship.

Study records
For the purposes of the incentive scholarship, studies and degrees completed in one academic year means studies and degrees that have been completed and marked into the Aalto University student register for the period from 1 August to 31 July.

This includes credits earned during that academic year in some other Finnish or foreign higher education institution, provided they have been transferred into the Aalto University student register. Any raised grades must also be entered into the student register by the end of the academic year to be counted towards the total credits earned.

Other information
The dean’s incentive scholarship can be obtained from only one Aalto school at a time. Tuition-fee-paying students who have been granted the 1500 € incentive scholarship are not eligible for the dean’s incentive scholarship.

The review of the 60 credits and graduation status is checked on 31 August, and any changes made to the register after this date will not be considered. An exception is made for first- and second-year bachelor’s students who have completed exchange studies abroad and have not received the documents from the partner university on time. Their credits must be marked into the student register by 30 September. Graduation must still occur within the target time according to the above conditions.

The time and manner of applying for the scholarship depends on the student’s stage of studies:

First- and second-year bachelor's students who have completed 60 credits will receive application instructions in their Aalto email when the application process begins. The application period occurs annually in October. The scholarship is only awarded upon application, and applications submitted after the application period will not be considered.

If you meet the criteria for the scholarship but have not received the application instructions to your email, please contact studentservices@aalto.fi during the application period.
Those who have graduated with their bachelor's or master's degrees within the target time will receive a link to the scholarship payment form via email in September. The link is sent to the Aalto email for those who have completed their bachelor's degree, while those who have completed their master's degree receive the link at their secondary email address listed in Sisu. The form must be submitted by 30 November.

The normative duration of studies is three years for a bachelor's degree, and two years for a master’s degree. If you were admitted to a master’s degree, you have four years to complete the degree. If you were admitted to both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree, you have a total of seven years to complete both degrees.

The duration of studies is counted from the time the you enrol as present (attending) at the university. Students have a right to certain absences that do not expend their duration of studies. Absence refers to time when the student has enrolled as non-attending.
