Student Reetta Kanervo: flexibility in studies makes it possible to combine studies, sports hobbies and part-time work

In Reeta's opinion, the best things about student life are internationality, freedom of choice and the fact that there is definitely something for everyone to do alongside their studies. For example, she has completed part of her studies abroad as individual summer courses, been a member of the board of a riding team and participated in a scuba diving course.

Why did you choose the Bachelor's Programme in Civil Engineering?

Before my studies in civil engineering, I studied architecture at Aalto, during which time my interest in the technical side of design was awakened. Studies in civil engineering contain comprehensive information related to the implementation design of buildings and provide good prerequisites for both design and supervisory tasks in diverse construction projects. Studies in civil engineering have broadened my opportunities to work in the construction industry.

In addition, the bachelor's programme allows you to apply natural sciences and learn, for example, the basics of coding and building information modelling, which I find interesting. I also see physics and mathematics courses as nice opportunities to challenge myself.

What is studying at Aalto like in practice?

Studying is inspiring and, above all, fun. In civil engineering studies, I like flexible schedules, challenging tasks in courses and, of course, community events. At Aalto, I have been able to combine studies in two major subjects, sports hobbies and part-time jobs smoothly.

On a normal day at the university, I spend time with my classmates juggling weekly assignments between lectures. At the end of our study day, we may go out together to play badminton or volleyball. Aalto has an encouraging and engaging atmosphere that maintains my enthusiasm for studies.

What is the best course at Aalto?

The most memorable courses for me have been "Philosophy and Systems Thinking" lectured by Esa Saarinen and "Spatial Structures" organized by Aalto Math&Arts. Both of these courses dealt with very abstract topics and concepts that have stuck in my mind for a long time. Such courses are a nice counterbalance to integral and differential calculus, for example.

Aalto has an encouraging and engaging atmosphere that maintains my enthusiasm for studies.

What is the best thing about student life?

The best things about student life are internationality, freedom of choice and the fact that there is definitely something for everyone to do alongside their studies. For example, I have completed part of my studies abroad as individual summer courses, been a member of the board of the Take the Reins riding group in Otaniemi and participated in the Kupla scuba diving course. Next autumn, I will again be in charge of the international tutors of the Guild of Civil Engineers. There are plenty of opportunities if you are willing to seize them.

What does the future of the industry look like?

The construction industry is constantly evolving as BIM and sustainability keep developing, so the future looks promising. There is likely to be more work to be done, especially in renovation and infrastructure construction. I am currently working with industrial sites, which also seems to be a steadily growing field.

The construction industry is constantly in need of more professionals in earthworks, foundation engineering and project planning, and all of the above can be specialised at Aalto.
