Basic data storage instructions
When you leave Aalto University, the files and emails stored in your personal cloud storage spaces will be deleted after your departure. This means that all important data should be stored in group data storage.
Save any necessary Aalto University files for others on a shared network drive or in a Microsoft Teams workspace. If you're unsure where to save, please ask your supervisor.
What is large data and what takes storage space?
The size of files affects how much storage space they require and how they can be shared, processed, and stored. By understanding which file formats and contents take up the most space, you can use data more efficiently and avoid storage or transfer issues.
What factors affect file size?
- File type and format: Text documents (e.g., Word, Excel) are usually small, whereas videos, images, and research data can be significantly larger.
- Compression: Compressed files (e.g., .zip, .mp3) take up less space than uncompressed formats.
- Content: Large images, high-resolution videos, and complex 3D models require more storage space. Small text files and simple spreadsheets are lighter.
- Metadata and additional material: For example, Photoshop projects contain multiple layers and can be significantly larger than finished images.
